March 3rd 2012 - Cape Reinga

3rd March 2012

Cape Reinga is the north western most tip of New Zealand, and as far north as is possible to go due to parts of the country being restricted for scientific protection. The name of the cape comes from the Maori word 'Reinga', meaning the 'Underworld' (due to the fact that in Maori mythology  the spirits of the dead travel to Cape Reinga on their journey to the afterlife to leap off the headland and climb the roots of the 800 year old tree and descend to the underworld to return to their traditional homeland of Hawaiki). The headland features a prominent lighthouse (now solar powered) and a signpost with distance to locations across the globe (at 18,029 km I'm a long way from home!).
